Taiwan Society of Lipids and Atherosclerosis, under the initiation and leadership of Professor Benjamin Chiang, was founded in June, 1994, and became the member of the International Atherosclerosis Society in January, 1995. During the course of President Jiang’s leadership, he actively cultivated new members and diligently conducted planning for establishing solid foundations for the Society. Subsequently followed by the leaderships exhibited by the past presidents, Professor Chuang-Ye Hong, Professor Philip Yu-An Ding, Professor Shing-Rong Lin, Professor Jaw-Wen Chen, Professor Wei-Hsian Yin, and Professor Chau-Chung Wu, the state of the Society had prospered day by day. The present eighth Presidentship is assumed by Professor Hung-I Yeh of Vice Superintendent, MacKay Memorial Hospital, as assisted by Secretary-General, Yi-Heng Li , Director of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Hospital, for continuing leading the Society to stride forward toward the Society’s goals.
The Society is a social group founded for non-profit objectives and in full compliance with the laws. The missions are to increase the basic and clinical research on the abnormal blood lipids and atherosclerosis and enhance the atherosclerosis prevention and treatment for promoting the citizen health and facilitating global academic exchanges. For enhancing and encouraging the basic and clinical research on the blood lipids and atherosclerosis in Taiwan, the Society inaugurated the "Academic Achievement Award of the Year”, with the award presented on an annual basis. The purpose is to celebrate the experts and scholars in Taiwan who achieve excellence in the research on the cardiovascular and atherosclerosis diseases, for improving the quality of the relevant research in Taiwan. In the academic research discipline, in addition, the academic seminars of interest are routinely held throughout the year, inviting domestic and overseas experts in the clinical and basic research on the blood lipids and atherosclerosis to conduct interactive opinion exchanges for new knowledge acquisition.
In the area of educational promotion, the Society also involves in the blood lipids and atherosclerosis prevention education programs for the populations in Taiwan. The new guidelines of the Chinese version for the first, second, and third editions of the National Cholesterol Education Program, as compiled and published by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the United States, were all responsibly translated and promoted by the Society. Furthermore, the Society and the Bureau of Health Promotion, Department of Health R.O.C. (Taiwan) jointly compiled the ”High Blood Lipids Prevention Booklet” and the ”Abnormal Blood Lipid Diagnosis and Prevention Guide” for Taiwan, which were already published in December, 2003 and September, 2009. In 2017, the society published “2017 Taiwan lipid guidelines for high risk patients”, which was endorsed by 6 other cardiometabolism-related societies of Taiwan (Taiwan Society of Cardiology, Taiwan Society of Cardiovascular Intervention, Taiwan Stroke Society, Taiwan Diabetes Association, Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Educators, and Taiwan Nephrology Association) and supported by Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare (formerly known as Bureau of Health Promotion), The Society, in collaboration with the Health Promotion Administration, participated in planning the existing medication guidelines for the blood lipid-lowering drugs for the National Health Insurance and assisted the formulation of the diagnosis standards for the high blood lipids and metabolic syndromes, for providing the domestic academia, physicians, and general public with an important guide on controlling and treating high blood lipid disease.
In the aspect of international cooperation, in addition to continuing the active involvement in the affairs of the International Atherosclerosis Society and the Asian- Pacific Atherosclerosis and Vascular Disease Society and to promoting the exposure of Taiwan’s research on blood lipids and atherosclerosis at the international stage, the Society also actively initiated multiple international conferences with passion: “First Asian-Pacific Atherosclerosis and Vascular Disease Congress” in March, 1998, the 2001 Cardiovascular Interventions Seminar in Taiwan” in June, 2001, “Fifth International Congress on Essential Fatty Acids and Eicosanoids” in August, 2002, pre-Congress Taipei meeting for the “2003 International Congress of the Atherosclerosis Societies” in September, 2003, “International Vascular Molecular Biology Seminar in Taipei” in September, 2000-2018, and co-organization of the “International Vascular Disease Conference” in November, 2004. By hosting multiple international conferences, it is desired to be capable of enhancing Taiwan’s academic research standards in the areas of blood lipids and atherosclerosis as well as the close exchange cooperation with other members of the international community, for promoting the integration of the academic atherosclerosis research and medical standards in the Asia Pacific region into the global mainstream.
